How Spirituality Transforms Entrepreneurs with Matt Welsh

In today’s fast-paced world, entrepreneurs often get caught up in the hustle and lose sight of the deeper purpose behind their work. True fulfillment and lasting success aren’t just about achieving business goals—they come from aligning with your emotional and spiritual self. To dive deeper into this connection, I had the chance to sit down with Matt Welsh, the author of Spiritual Media Blog and host of the Spiritual Media Blog Podcast. Matt shared his personal journey and powerful insights on how spirituality and emotional healing, including tools like Brainspotting, can transform not only your business but your life. His perspective brings a fresh take on what it really means to thrive as an entrepreneur.

What inspired you to create Spiritual Media Blog, and how has your journey influenced your view on spirituality and emotional healing?

I created Spiritual Media Blog to raise awareness for emerging conscious entertainment. In 2007, I graduated law school and moved to Los Angeles to work for an entertainment agency, the William Morris Agency. I saw great films being made like Conversations with God, Celestine Prophecy, and What the Bleep Do We Know. But, they didn’t get mainstream media attention. So, I initially created Spiritual Media Blog to raise awareness for these types of movies. Since then my blog has expanded to reviews, interviews, video podcasts, guest posts, and excerpts related books, TV shows, music, and all types of media focused on spiritual growth, integrative psychology, and personal transformation.

My personal journey has influenced my view on spirituality and emotional healing because I have developed greater empathy and understanding of the importance to stay grounded while pursuing spiritual growth and your dreams. For example, I started off first working in Hollywood at an entertainment agency, then as a trial lawyer for Department of Child Services, and then a family law attorney. I wasn’t happy with working as a lawyer because I was arguing everyday, at times for causes or clients I didn’t believe in. I had to acknowledge my own emotional unhappiness and work through that. That got me really interested in psychotherapy, helped me develop greater empathy for self and others, and a willingness to acknowledge all of my emotional states, even unhappy ones like fear, sadness, grief, anger, and disappointment. Working through those emotions has helped me develop an authentic happiness and appreciation for the work I now do as a licensed psychologist, blogger, and my podcast.

How do you see the intersection between spirituality and entrepreneurship, especially for high-achievers?

Spirituality can help us be open and receptive to our Spirit or God. Ultimately, this leads to greater inspiration and creativity. For example, I didn’t consciously sit down one day and try to plan out how to create a blog. Spiritual Media Blog was an idea that just came to me. Similarly, I have a private psychotherapy, biofeedback, and coaching practice that have been largely guided by my intuition and synchronicity which is the result of me staying spiritually connected to Spirit.

High-achievers can use their strengths to develop discipline and perseverance to pursue their spiritual and business goals, but need to be careful not to get burned out or get their work-life balance out of balance by pushing themselves past their capacity or sacrificing their family and self-care responsibilities.

It is also important for high-achievers to focus on what choices are in alignment with the best and highest good rather than temporarily satisfying their ego’s desires. For example, at times I have probably been overly focused on increasing website traffic and social media followers rather than just creating or producing content that will serve the best and highest good and letting go of my ego’s goals and desires.

What are the biggest challenges you've seen entrepreneurs face in connecting with their spiritual selves, and how do you help them overcome those obstacles?

Entrepreneurs face a never-ending to-do list and/or there is always something they could be doing to grow their business. Trying to accomplish every single task as soon as possible can prevent them from connecting with their spiritual selves. You can overcome those obstacles by prioritizing time with your spiritual self first on a daily basis. For example, before you begin or start any work for the day, spend at least 10-30 minutes connecting with your spiritual self through meditation, yoga, prayer, reading spiritual literature, journaling, listening to inspirational podcasts, or some sort of guided practice. Then, consult with your spiritual self to determine what action you should or should not take that day.

How do spiritual practices support entrepreneurs in moving past self-doubt, fear, or emotional barriers?

Spiritual practices such as meditation and yoga help to connect us to our spiritual self, which experiences an inner knowing or peace that passes understanding and transcends rational thought. This spiritual self is capable of giving us strength, inspiration, and guidance when we are experiencing self-doubt or fear.

Spiritual practices can also give us self-compassion to be kind and nonjudgmental of ourself when we experiencing fear and self-doubt. For example, bravery or courage is the quality of taking action when we are feeling fear or self-doubt. Sometimes, it can be helpful to accept that we are experiencing self-doubt or fear because those are normal emotions of being human. But also know we can still move forward with our fear and self-doubt.

Now that you've learned about Brainspotting, how do you see it fitting into the broader conversation about emotional and spiritual healing?

Brainspotting is an effective tool in helping us see the connection between our brain, body, and emotions. If we can use Brainspotting to heal our emotions, especially from unresolved experiences or emotions, then that frees us to connect more to our spiritual self

Can you share a favorite story from your interviews that speaks to overcoming emotional or spiritual barriers?

I interviewed Viki King about her house burning down in the Malibu fires. She said she looked at it as an adventure and a way to start something new. I was very impressed that she wasn’t more stressed or anxious or angry. This reminded me that when I am faced with a “fire” or something “burning down” in my life I could look at it as an adventure, a chance to create something new or grow, and trust that God or my spiritual self likely has something greater in store for me.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who feel stuck or overwhelmed but are seeking to reconnect with their spiritual purpose and business goals?

Take time to daydream and connect with the emotion of your dreams. Visualize yourself living your dreams and what that would look like in your life. Connect with the emotional state or feeling that the dream generates. Then let go or surrender that dream over to God or your Higher Power. Trust the guidance you are getting along the way even if it doesn’t seem like you are making progress towards your business goals. Sometimes our spiritual purpose is to rest, connect with our family and friends, or take time for our spiritual practices. This may seem counterintuitive for accomplishing our business goals. But, it will help create a strong foundation for business success and happiness in the long run.
