Is Your Constant Hunger and Fatigue a Sign of Insulin Resistance?
The Struggle is Real... But What's the Real Issue?
You're tired.
You're hungry.
You're frustrated.
You've tried everything, but nothing seems to work.
You're not alone!
Many people like you are going through the same struggle. But what if I told you that the root cause might be something you've overlooked?
Something that's often misunderstood, even by doctors. Could it be insulin resistance or even diabetes? Let's dive in and find out.
What is Insulin Resistance?
Imagine your body is a car, and insulin is the key that unlocks the door to let sugar (glucose) in.
When you're insulin resistant, it's like the lock is jammed. The key doesn't work well, so sugar gets stuck in your bloodstream.
Your body then needs more keys (insulin) to unlock the door.
This can lead to a host of problems, including constant hunger, fatigue, and weight gain.
Sound familiar?
Is Insulin Resistance the Same as Diabetes?
Great question!
While they're related, they're not the same.
Think of insulin resistance as the prequel to diabetes—a warning sign. If left unchecked, it can progress to Type 2 diabetes or several other chronic diseases!
But here's the good news: catching it early means you can take action to reverse it.
So, how do you know if you have it?
The Sneaky Symptoms You Shouldn't Ignore
Constant Hunger: Even after eating, you're still hungry. Why? Your cells aren't getting the energy they need.
Chronic Fatigue: You're always tired but can't figure out why. It's because your cells are energy-starved even though you are eating enough, the cells can’t use it.
Brain Fog: Can't focus? Blame it on the sugar stuck in your bloodstream, not reaching your brain.
Weight Gain: Despite your best efforts, the scale won't budge. Your body is storing sugar as fat.
If you're nodding your head, it's time to pay attention.
How to Know for Sure: Tests and Diagnosis
You can't fix a problem if you don't know it exists, right? A simple blood test can reveal a lot. Your doctor may recommend:
Fasting Insulin Test: Checks your insulin levels after fasting.
Fasting Blood Sugar (Glucose): A spot-check of how much sugar is floating around in your blood right now.
A1c: Gives an approximation of what your blood sugar levels have been for the last 3 months.
CRP: C-Reactive Protein: This looks at how inflamed you are. People with Insulin Resistance tend to have more overall inflammation in their bodies which can lead to all sorts of issues.
Lipid Panel: AKA Cholesterol test. When your insulin is high, your risk of having high cholesterol is up there too! While your doctor will look at LDL (most likely) the numbers most closely linked to your heart attack or stroke risk are your Triglycerides and your HDL (known as “good cholesterol”.
Don't let the medical jargon scare you. These tests are a starting point on the road to better health.
Take Control: Your Action Plan
Enough with the problem, let's talk solutions!
Eat Right: Focus on low-carb, whole foods like the ones on this free list. Ditch the processed stuff.
Move More: Mild exercise helps your cells use insulin better. Even a short walk after a meal can make a difference.
Mind Your Stress: Stress hormones can mess with your insulin. Deep breathing, anyone?
Consult a Health Coach: Sometimes you need a guide to show you the way. That's where a health coach comes in.
